Sailing Offshore to Jekyll Island, GA

At 1 pm on Friday, January 9 we left Port Royal, SC through Port Royal Sound to the Atlantic. We had beautiful calm weather, a spectacular sunset and a full moon for the 20 hour trip to Jekyll Island, Georgia. We took turns being on the helm and sleeping. The only anxious moments were entering the St. Simon channel from the sea just before sunrise. We saw a confusing pattern of navigation lights from a large vessel approaching us in the channell. We could not discern from our book of lights what kind of a vessel we were meeting or how precisely they were moving. So we hugged the starboard edge of the channel. When we got close enough we saw it was a large freighter being passed by a large shrimp boat. Two sets of lights had appreared to us to be merged.
