We visited Fort McHenry and reviewed the history of how the British Navy fresh from its burning of Washington, DC in the war of 1812 tried to take the city of Baltimore but could not get past Fort McHenry. Over 26 hours of bombardment the cannon of Ft. McHenry still made passage to Baltimore impossible and the British withdrew. We no longer sing the 3rd stanza of "The Star Spangled Banner" since our relationship with Britian is friendlier. Some of the bombs did not burst in air, but fell harmlessly on the fort and are on display in the visitors center today. The bombs and the rockets put on a great fireworks show but were ineffective against the fort.
