We don't know what this is. Do you?

Today we left Hampton, VA and travelled North into the Chesapeake Bay. Two of these naval vessels passed us at high speed. They seem to be driven by huge fans on the stern and they make a lot of noise and are surrounded by clouds of water. (Thanks for your responses: Landing Craft Air Cushioned, a hovercraft that carries troops and tanks across water and sand is the identity of this beast.)

That's a hovercraft. The skirt you see at the bottom (black part) holds a cushion of air, and giant fans force air into that cushion, holding the craft up. They can travel on land and sea quite easily, which makes them good landing craft for the military.

My friend John Penner, PO1C in the Canadian Navy, advises that the ship you saw is an LCAC -- Landing Craft, Air Cushioned. You can see more pictures and read much more detail about it at http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/lcac.htm.
