Returning Home after adventures at sea
On 5/12 Sandpiper and her people traveled from St Augustine, FL with our friends, Bob and Linda Knighton, on Syzygy in the Intercoastal waterway to an anchorage at Cumberland Island. There were wild horses in the meadows and on the beach during a cool moonlit night. On 5/13 we continued with Syzygy to Brunswick Landing Marina, Brunswick, GA. There we reestablished contact with Gene and Gail Knight on Wind Dancer and toured St. Simon’s Island lighthouse as well as the homes of the millionaires club on Jekyll Island. We had hoped to leave Sandpiper at the Brunswick Landing Marina for hurricane season but found they were full with boats coming north from Florida. So we consoled ourselves with peel and eat shrimp at the Wee Pub and visited the Brunswick farmer’s market. We made a reservation to haul Sandpiper at Dataw Island Marina and Yard. The wind continued to be on the nose so we decided to motor the ditch again! On 5/16 we departed for the New Tea Kettle Creek Anchorage where we had anchored last January. This is a beautiful spot we love and the sunset was spectacular. On 5/17 we continued North in Georgia to Herb Creek anchorage traveling only on the rising tide to avoid problems with low water at the first quarter of the moon. Linda made a wonderful dinner on board with products from the Brunswick farmer’s market including fried okra, green beans, and summer squash, corn muffins with white wine followed with a freshly baked chocolate cake. Spectacular!! On 5/18 we left with Syzygy for Dataw Island Marina, SC. Syzygy will also be hauled here for the hurricane season. We put a dehumidifier on board, removed sails, dinghy, generator and cockpit enclosure. It was already getting hot and humid in South Carolina. We are hoping that the hurricanes will not pass through South Carolina this summer. We drove a rental car home through the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and the beautiful valleys of Tennessee. We are back home in Geneva, IL and grateful to have had a challenging adventure, shared it with so many old friends, and made so many new friends.
