Onward to Marsh Harbour
We left Fisher Bay for a short but beautiful sail to Marsh Harbour where we anchored in anticipation of the arrival on 3/4/06 of Bruce Kuehl and Mary Jane Cross. We took the dinghy and went into Marsh Harbor to explore.
Linda will tell the story of what we found: While taking the dingy toward shore I saw a boat pulled up on a small beach with two men working in it. My hunter-gatherer instincts began to tingle. So as we walked along the road toward the beach I was pleased to see two men cleaning a load of conch. They had set shells out for people to take and as a signel that they were in business. I talked to them for a few minutes and was amazed to see the skill with which they cracked the conch. Four hard taps with a hammer to make an opening and a few knfe strokes and he pulled out the conch. The other man skinned it quickly and it was ready to sell. We bought two for dinner and the fishermen told me the secret of cooking it so it would not turn to shoe leather. They gave us two beautiful shells so Loy can make a conch horn to blow the sun down at night.
Our next stop was a bakery for morning rolls and a small shop for a roti for lunch. All in all a successful walk ! We will hit the bakery again on Sat for fresh bread for the trip this week. We took the conch back in the dingy and had a traditional Bahamnian dinner. ---pigeon peas, rice and cracked conch--- also a cold beer--- mmmmmm! Great day which we topped off with hot shewers in the boat instead of on the deack with the solar shower.
Our son, Carl, is trying to work out time to come sail with us soon. We can't wait.
