Georgetown

From Bucksport we went south to historic Georgetown. This was a colonial era sea port that transported the rice raised on plantations. Slaves comprised 85% of the population. In July and August mosquitoes and malaria were a major problem, sometimes wiping out entire families. There are still a surprising number of homes of colonial plantation owners preserved in Georgetown as well as antebellum homes. Today shrimping is a major industry along with wood pulp mills and steel processing. We bought shrimp fresh off the boats and had a feast on Sandpiper.
