Waccamaw River Osprey Nest

The Waccamaw River of South Carolina is probably the most beautiful stretch of wooded water that we have traveled along the intercoastal water way. Turtles sun themselves on the banks. The woods are made up of layers of cypress trees along the water backed by pine tress receding into the thick woods. The eastern bank of the river is a wildlife preserve and the calls of birds and the raptors circling high overhead in the thermals testify to its success. Many of the ICW markers like this one are topped with osprey nests with young being fed by a protective parent.
