Jekyll Island, Georgia

We visited Jekyll Island, a southeast Georgia barrier island. “The richest, most exclusive, least accessible club in the world” is the way the Jekyll Island Club was described in Munson’s Magazine in 1904. The millionaires club was founded in 1886 and for over four gilded decades the island was the exclusive domain of some of America’s most elite families.

It was the winter retreat for families including the Morgan, Astor, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt and Pulitzer families. It was a private world of grand cottage residences around a Queen Anne-style clubhouse. Today many of the historic homes and buildings have been preserved. There are also beautiful beaches, bicycle paths and woods over 65% of the island. We have been walking, bicycling, and enjoying the marina’s hot tub and showers. This morning we had a white table cloth breakfast at the Jekyll Island Club and enjoyed the change of pace from usual boat life.
